Most of the calories you burn will be done in the lean muscle you develop in your body, so when you develop more lean muscle you increase the rate at which you burn energy.
Unfortunately for most people, once you hit 25 you slowly begin to lose about half a pound of lean muscle each year. This in turn lowers your resting metabolic rate (this is the rate your body uses energy at rest).
Thus you begin to put on weight, unless you either eat less or exercise more.
So to counter this affect, you have to increase your resting metabolic rate through weight or resistance training, by building or toning your muscles.
This is why it’s so important to combine your cardio training with your weight training. You don’t get as great an increase on your metabolic rate just by doing cardio training when compared to weight training.
With cardio you just burn extra calories for the length of time you workout, plus an hour or two after exercise.
Whereas by building and toning up your muscles you’ll get greater benefit even when you haven’t been exercising.
So if you want to turn your body into a calorie burning machine – you MUST include weight training into your workout routine!
